Start earlier than you think, and go category by category, not box by box. Everything you let go of before the move is something you don't have to pack, carry, unpack and find a place for.
A plan that works for most moves:
- Six weeks out: sell the big things. Furniture and electronics take the longest to sell. List them first.
- Four weeks out: one Category Attack a week. Clothes, books, kitchen, papers. Gather each one in full, decide, done.
- Two weeks out: donate in bulk. Book a pickup or do one big drop-off rather than five small ones.
- Moving week: the last sweep. Bathroom, cleaning supplies, the fridge, the junk drawer.
In Declutter Quest, make a "Moving" tag (Premium) and add it to everything that leaves because of the move. After you've settled in, filter the journal by that tag. It's satisfying to see exactly how much you didn't have to carry.
And log the sales with the amount. Moving is expensive, and it's nice to know what the declutter paid back.
