Why I Always Declutter Before the Holiday Season
Every November, I find myself looking around the house with fresh eyes. The holidays are approaching, guests may be coming, and somewhere between the decorations and the gift shopping, I realize: we simply have too much stuff. Sound familiar?
There's a very practical reason to declutter before Christmas. New gifts are about to arrive, and they need somewhere to go. Holiday cleaning isn't about making your home perfect for guests — it's about making space for the season ahead. When you know exactly what you own, you're less likely to buy or receive duplicates, and the things you do keep feel more intentional.
And then there's the feeling. I don't know about you, but walking into a freshly ordered home on Christmas morning is one of my favourite small luxuries. The Winter Clutter Snap challenge is designed to help you get there — a pre-holiday declutter that takes the stress out of the season and replaces it with a genuine sense of calm.
How the Winter Cleaning Challenge Works
What makes Winter Clutter Snap different from just "deciding to tidy up" is the community behind it. This isn't a solo project — it's a declutter event that thousands of people take on together every year, and the community grows every season.
The challenge runs through November and December as a 12-stage home organization challenge. Participants across the country start in early November, each working through the same twelve stages from their own homes. There are no gatherings or meetups — just a shared structure that keeps everyone moving forward together, one stage at a time.
That structure lives in the Declutter Quest app. You join the challenge, work through each stage at your own pace, and log every item you declutter. Think of it as a holiday cleaning challenge you follow from your own living room — alongside people who are opening the same drawers and asking themselves the same questions.
Tip: Start early in November. In my experience, the later you leave it, the busier everything gets — and even 10 minutes a day adds up remarkably fast.
The 12 Stages: Your Holiday Declutter Checklist
Here's the complete breakdown of the Winter Clutter Snap. Each stage builds momentum, starting with the areas that give you the quickest sense of accomplishment. Last year's participants reported that by stage five, the process felt almost automatic.
- Easy Wins — Broken items, expired products, obvious duplicates. These quick removals give you instant momentum and prove that yes, you can do this.
- Bags & Pockets — Every bag, purse, backpack, and coat pocket in the house. Empty them all, sort through the contents, and let go of what you no longer need.
- Paper Catch-Up — Old mail, receipts, catalogues, and outdated paperwork. Recycle, shred, or file — the paper clutter is often the most underestimated.
- One Shelf Refresh — Choose one shelf anywhere in the house and curate it. Keep only what genuinely belongs. One perfect shelf changes how you see the whole room.
- Wardrobe Tops — Shirts, blouses, jumpers, hoodies. If it hasn't been worn since last winter, it's time to let it move on to someone who'll love it.
- Wardrobe Bottoms — Trousers, skirts, jeans, shorts. The same rule applies: if you don't reach for it, release it.
- Kitchen Duplicates — Extra utensils, mismatched containers, unused gadgets. The kitchen quietly collects more duplicates than any other room in the house.
- Drawer Dive — The junk drawer, the utility drawer, the "I'll sort it later" drawer. Well, later is now.
- Bathroom Edit — Expired medications, old toiletries, samples you'll realistically never use. Clear the cabinets and feel the difference immediately.
- Books & Media — Books you won't re-read, old DVDs, stacked magazines. A donation to the local charity shop means your stories get a second life.
- Hobby Items — Craft supplies, unfinished projects, equipment for hobbies you've quietly moved on from. It's okay to let these go.
- Small Spaces — Under the bed, behind the sofa, on top of wardrobes. These hidden spots hold more than you'd ever expect — and clearing them feels incredible.
Making It a Shared Experience
One thing I've learned after years of seasonal challenges is that decluttering is better with company. And the Winter Clutter Snap community proves it every year. Here's how participants make this home declutter marathon a shared experience.
- Challenge a friend to complete the 12 stages alongside you. Even a simple daily check-in keeps both of you moving forward.
- Turn it into a family holiday preparation project. Assign each family member their own zones, or take on stages together as a weekend activity.
- Start a group chat for daily progress updates. A quick photo of your cleared shelf or emptied drawer inspires everyone — and it's surprisingly fun.
- Pair each milestone with a small reward: a movie night after five stages, a favourite meal after all twelve. You've earned it.
Tip: Many participants share their progress on social media with the hashtag #ClutterSnap. It's a wonderful way to find others going through the same declutter event — and the encouragement from strangers-turned-community-members is surprisingly powerful.
Where Do Your Items Go Before the Holidays?
The pre-holiday season is one of the best times to pass things along. Charity shops are actively stocking up, shelters welcome warm clothing and household items, and community toy drives are in full swing. Your decluttered items don't disappear — they become someone else's fresh start.
- Donate — Charity shops, shelters, community toy drives, and online gifting groups. Your pre-holiday declutter becomes someone else's holiday gift.
- Sell — Online marketplaces, local selling apps, or a pre-holiday garage sale. A little extra holiday budget never hurts.
- Recycle — Check local recycling options for textiles, electronics, and paper. You may be surprised how many dedicated streams exist in your area.
- Discard — If it's genuinely broken or past its useful life, let it go. No guilt necessary.
